Seeing the Solution in School Supplies

1

The Merchant sisters saw an abundance of pencils, pens, crayons, markers, etc. accumulating in their own home as they, like many of their peers, were fortunate to get brand new school supplies at the beginning of each school year.

2

They took action by setting up collection drives at the end of the academic year. They collected, sorted, and donated over 400 pounds of school supplies locally to unhoused students.

Encouraged, Insha and Sheza repeated this collection drive at the end of the following school year. Again, the bins were overflowing. This time, school supplies, including books and teaching materials, were delivered to schools serving underprivileged students in the U.S., Pakistan, and Haiti.

3

The school supply drive has now become an annual tradition. Over the last eight years, with the help of our global partners, over 4,200 pounds of gently used pencils, pens, markers, crayons, rulers, calculators, and more have been kept out of landfills and have been placed in the backpacks of over 5,000 underprivileged and refugee school students.
